Blessing is a current member or alumnus of the Writers Guild of America, west; the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis; New Dramatists in NY and the Societe des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques.

This is great news! Lee Blessing is not only a gifted playwright, but is a dedicated educator and supporter of new voices. A perfect match for the GPTC!

TheatreNews: UCLA Live! Drops Theatre Programming

The reduction in state support had little to do with the decision to eliminate the International Theatre Festival from the 2010-11 season, given that the UCLA Live program receives minimal support from the State of California. Rather, a significant downturn in ticket sales as a result of the poor economic climate is the real culprit.

Thank to Lee Wochner for pointing this out via his blog. I hadn't heard this news and it's very sad indeed.

Lee articulates the disappointment way better than I could, so be sure to read his thoughts here: http://leewochner.com/blog/?p=1715

For me, the sadness comes in the fact that this festival was committed to exposing us to international theatre. I think it's vital and exciting to see work from others outside our cultural borders.

I also feel that, unfortunately, tickets for UCLA Live! were quite expensive. They surely needed to go beyond the state funding and search for alumni, individual and most importantly, institutional investors. Yes, "economic times" and yada, yada...there's still TONS of money out there. And like Lee points out, this kind of programming is just rare in Los Angeles. It surprises me that they couldn't find some specific grants and/or alumni underwriters willing to support this venture. Perhaps it will be revived, but sometimes, in these instances, once cut, forever gone.

Free Night of Theater 2009

Don't be fooled by the Oct 15th date. That was the "start" date. Many tickets still available. All across the country. Pick a theatre you've never been to and get out and see some theatre!
